Bacon vodka
On a forum I follow one of the members tried this to horrendous results. Not being one to turn down a possible disaster I have decided to give it an attempt.
For some good bacon humor click here to listen to Jim Gaffigan talk about bacon.
For this you are going to need:
- 1/4 lb of bacon
- 16 ounces of vodka
- 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns
Fry up your bacon over medium-low heat. Let it cook turning every so often.
Drain the bacon.
Fill up a 16 ounce mason jar with 1 teaspoon of whole black peppercorns. Pat the top of the bacon dry and place in the jar. Fill the jar to the top with vodka (I am using Absoult) and make sure everything is covered. Cover it up and let it sit in a dark cool place (I chose a cupboard) for weeks and shake it up every couple of days.
Strain the grease off into your trusty bacon grease mason jar for another use (cornbread comes to mind).
Once the 3 weeks is up. Place the mason jar in the freezer overnight. Remove it and using a good strainer with a couple layers of cheesecloth strain the mixture into another mason jar.
Look at the mixture and if it still looks like clumps of fat are floating in it. Put it back in the freezer and strain again.
Now the million dollar question is how does it taste? Well I would have to say reminds me of drinking vodka martinis all night long and then ending up at some greasy spoon and ordering the bacon with your breakfast. Definitely can’t wait to start working it into some recipes.

Ok, so, was the bacon vodka worth it?
I will be teaching a cooking class this fall that features all bacon recipes and I was thinking of having some bacon vodka on hand to use in bloody marys. But, I don’t want to gross out my students.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks!
